Washington [US], February 25: French President Emmanuel Macron gave a prediction about the end of the war in Ukraine, after meeting his US counterpart Donald Trump at the White House.
AFP news agency on February 25 quoted French President Emmanuel Macron warning that peace does not mean "surrender" for Ukraine, but said dialogue with US President Donald Trump showed a way forward, despite concerns about a transatlantic rift.
Meeting at the White House on the occasion of the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine (February 24, 2022 - February 24, 2025), the two leaders said there was progress on the idea of sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, although Mr. Macron emphasized the need for the US to ensure Ukraine's security.
"This peace cannot mean surrender to Ukraine," the French president said at a joint press conference after meeting with the White House boss in Washington DC.
Mr Macron said Mr Trump had "good reasons" to resume dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but also said it was important for Washington to "support" any European peacekeeping force.
The French president said he would work with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who will visit the White House on Thursday, on a proposal to send peacekeepers to Ukraine in the event of a deal.
"After speaking with President Trump, I am absolutely convinced that there is a way forward," Mr Macron said.
President Trump said he was confident he could end the fighting and hoped Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would come to the White House in the next two weeks to sign an agreement that would give the United States access to Ukraine 's rare minerals.
