Seoul [South Korea], August 4: South Korean officials said yesterday that nearly 600 people fell ill and required medical attention with symptoms related to high temperature during a scouting event that opened on August 2.
The event attracts tens of thousands of people from around the world, according to Reuters. With the above situation, the Korean fire agency asked the organizers to suspend the event, but only the fireworks ceremony on the last night was cancelled. On August 3, Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo directed the dispatch of 30 military doctors and 60 nurses to the event venue to handle emergency cases. Earlier, Interior and Safety Minister Lee Sang-min had called for ambulances, shuttle buses and air-conditioners to be ready to respond.
The event comes at a time when South Korea is experiencing a severe heat wave that forced the government to raise the alert to the highest level this week. Temperatures in some areas have reached 38 degrees Celsius. So far, at least 17 people have died from the impact of the heat in South Korea. The hot weather is expected to continue in this country until next week.
