Cleveland [Ohio], March 21: CNN on March 21 reported that a woman in Cleveland (Ohio) was just sentenced to life in prison for leaving her toddler home alone while on vacation for 10 days, causing the child's death.
Defendant Kristel Candelario (32 years old) admitted to serious murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole, after leaving 16-month-old Jailyn Candelario in a crib at home.
Judge Brendan Sheehan said that this mother had "acted the utmost treachery" by leaving her young daughter "trapped in a tiny prison" while traveling to Puerto Rico and the city of Detroit (Michigan state, USA ) . ) in June 2023.
"Just as the defendant did not release Jailyn from custody, the defendant must also spend the rest of his life in a cell without freedom," Judge Sheehan told defendant Candelario when sentencing.
Forensic pathologist Elizabeth Mooney determined baby Jailyn died of starvation and severe dehydration due to abandonment and ruled her death a homicide.
During the sentencing hearing on March 18, prosecutors showed video footage showing defendant Candelario leaving home on June 6, 2023 with a suitcase and returning on the morning of June 16, 2023. About 10 minutes later, the woman called 911 and said her daughter had died.
Candelario is a former substitute teacher. Initially, she also told investigators that she was taking care of her daughter at home, and that she was sick and vomiting before finding her unresponsive on June 16, 2023.
