Seoul [South Korea], September 14: South Korea's conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol has nominated a former three-star general as the new defence minister in a minor Cabinet reshuffle.
Shin Won Sik, a member of parliament from the conservative governing People's Power Party (PPP), has vast experience in defence policy, a spokesman for the presidential office said on Wednesday.
Shin is also a member of the Defence Committee and is to replace Lee Jong Sup as portfolio chief. Opposition lawmakers had threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against Lee.
They accused him of unjustifiably interfering in a military investigation into the death of a marine, who had been deployed to search for missing persons after floods in July and died.
Yoon also appointed a new minister of gender equality and family and a new minister of culture.
All three candidates must first be approved in a parliamentary hearing before being formally appointed.
