Mogadishu [Somalia], October 22: At least 14 Somali soldiers were killed in a suicide car bomb attack on an army base near the capital of Mogadishu, police confirmed on Saturday. "We have lost 14 Somali soldiers in the terrorist attack. Two civilians were also killed as the blasts destroyed many homes around the military camp," police officer Mohamed Dahir told dpa. The Islamist group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack via its Radio Andalus, but said it had killed around 50 soldiers. Dahir said that the bomber targeted the camp, about 15 kilometres south-west of Mogadishu, as it belongs to the Somali military police, a newly formed specialist force intended to beef up security in the capital and surroundings areas. Security official Abdimalik Hussein told dpa that members of the national intelligence and security agency were among those killed in the attack. Dahir said the bomber used a bulletproof vehicle, which enabled him to enter the camp on Saturday morning.
