Beirut [Lebanon], June 6: Two people have been detained after shots were fired at the US embassy in the Lebanese capital Beirut, the diplomatic mission reported on X on Wednesday. "At 8:34 am local time, small arms fire was reported in the vicinity of the entrance to the US Embassy," the post said. It added that "thanks to the quick reaction" of the Lebanese army and internal security team, "our facility and our team are safe."
According to the Lebanese army, one suspected gunman was wounded, detained and taken to a hospital. He is said to be a Syrian citizen.
There was initially no information on a motive for the attack. After a manhunt in the area, another suspect was detained hours later and handed over to intelligence services, the state news agency NNA reported. (DPA)
