Washington [US], April 13: Republican US lawmakers have just criticized President Joe Biden 's administration after the embargoed Chinese company Huawei launched a laptop with an artificial intelligence (AI) chip made by Intel. American made.
The US put Huawei on the trade restrictions list in 2019 related to allegations of violating sanctions against Iran, according to Reuters. This means US suppliers must seek special licenses before shipping to Huawei.
One such license issued by former President Donald Trump's administration allowed Intel to supply central processing units to Huawei for use in laptops starting in 2020.
Hard-liners have urged Mr. Biden's administration to revoke that license, but many are content to wait for it to expire at the end of this year and will not be renewed.
On April 11, Huawei launched its first AI laptop, MateBook X Pro with Intel's Core Ultra 9 processor. This shocked and angered many US lawmakers because they believed that the US Department of Commerce had approved the export of new chips to Huawei.
Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik said the laptop "clearly demonstrates" that the commerce department has given the green light to new chip shipments to Huawei.
"It is unacceptable that the Biden administration is actively working to undermine US national security by allowing our greatest strategic adversary access to advanced US technology," she wrote. on social networks.
The US Department of Commerce declined to comment. Huawei and Intel did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Another Republican congressman, Mr. Michael McCaul, believes that such licensing should be stopped. "Two years ago, I was informed that licensing for Huawei would stop. Today, it seems the policy has not changed," he said.
One source said the chips were shipped under existing licenses and were not affected by recent restrictions on AI chip shipments to China.
